In this dung heap of bands, there are a few that are pretty awesome, and I encourage you to check them out. Sum 41 and Boxcar Racer are two of them. Today, though, we’re gonna talk about the band that got me listening to this pop-punk music again: New Found Glory.
In today’s eclectic mix of ‘hardcore’ and ‘punk’ bands it is getting tougher and tougher to find anything that’s good. I mean, anybody can throw down an upbeat rhythm, toss some whiny vocalist behind it and call it punk anymore. We have our San Diego natives, Blink 182, to thank for that. Now, don’t get me wrong...I still dig Blink, it’s just all the knock offs out there that upset me.
Now, NFG has been around for about 6 years now. They’ve ben working pretty hard too. They formed a strong and devoted following by playing live a lot and winning over audiences. Being from Florida accorded them the opportunity to tour along the East Coast and the South quite a bit. They released their first EP through a local Florida label, and were then picked up by Drive Thru records. It didn’t take long for MCA to pick them up and send them to the airwaves!
Anyone can find that out on the website. There’s a lot of other good stuff there too. But why did I start to listen to these guys? Do any of you remember the glory days of Napster? Well, I sure do. I used to search for just about anything. One day, I found this track by a band called New Found Glory. At first, I thought it was a Christian group. But what Christian group is gonna do a punk cover of the theme from “The Neverending Story?” So, I downloaded it. Yeah, yeah...call me a music thief or whatever...it was a long time ago, and I did buy the album!
Man, this track rocked!! A ran down to the music store and grabbed their EP entitled, “From the Screen to Your Stereo.” It was an album with punk versions of songs from “My Heart Will Go On” to the theme from “That Thing You Do.” I ate this up! These guys were pretty awesome.
It wasn’t too long after this that I went and saw this little movie called American Pie 2 . Up comes a party scene...and NFG is playing on the soundtrack!! You might have heard the song...it’s called “Hit Or Miss.” This is a no miss track. Just a great song.
long story short...check these guys out. They’ve got a new one out called “Sticks and Stones” and it’s just as good as the rest of their material. But, if you can, find that “From the Screen to Your Stereo” and check it out! All in all, New Found Glory is definitely a HIT!
